The music department offer two courses at Key Stage 5 and both have proved to be enjoyable and popular with pupils.
Music: AS (AQA syllabus) AS Music provides pupils with a pathway from GCSE and takes GCSE study to the next level. Pupils study three areas of music: Performing Pupils perform a 5-8 minute programme of music, choosing two of the following: Solo on an instrument Solo on voice Solo on a 2nd instrument Ensemble Close-mic recording Sequencing Composing Pupils study compositional techniques which are then assessed in a 20 hour controlled time in which they create a piece of music from the following: Harmonisation of a diatonic melody/Controlling texture Free Composition in response to a given genre Arranging Listening and Appraising Section A Pupils will sit a listening exam which assesses their skills in identifying features of music Section B Pupils study The Jupiter Symphony by Mozart and then write an essay on the symphony Section C Pupils study Musical Theatre and are assessed in the form of an essay Music: A2 (AQA syllabus) As AS, pupils study three areas of music: Performing Pupils perform a 10-15 minute performance, choosing from the following: Solo on instrument/voice Technology-based performances (sequencing and close-mic recording) Composing As AS Listening and Appraising Section A As AS Section B Pupils study Symphony No 5 by Vaughan Williams and are assessed in the form of an essay Section C Pupils study Four Decades of Jazz and Blues are assessed in the form of an essay Performing Arts: AS (OCR syllabus) Performing Arts is a vocational A Level in which pupils study three units: Unit 1 Investigating Performing Arts Organisations (internally marked, externally moderated) Pupils develop their understanding of what a performing arts organisation is and produce an essay and powerpoint focusing on two organisations and the job role within them. Unit 2 Skills Development (internally marked, externally moderated) Pupils perform three performances and produce a diary showing how their skills have developed over the period of time. Unit 3 Professional Practice: Performance (externally marked by visiting examiner) Pupils work as a group to produce and perform a 30-60 minute performance Performing Arts: A2 (OCR syllabus) At A2, pupils build on prior study: Unit 4 Getting Work (internally marked, externally moderated) Pupils produce a self-promotion pack which would promote them as a performer in the industry Unit 5 Exploring Repertoire (internally marked, externally moderated) Pupils produce and perform two extracts of work, one contemporary and one historical Unit 6 Producing Your Showcase (externally marked by visiting examiner) Pupils perform two solo pieces and a duet
