Music Key Stage 4

Pupils have two different options at Key Stage 4, providing them with a choice of pathways.  Key Stage 4 courses are very popular and pupils enjoy the varied nature of the courses.

 

GCSE Music
GCSE Music is an exciting and enjoyable course in which pupils are able to develop a wide range of skills.  Pupils study three areas of music:  performing, composing and listening and appraising, following the AQA syllabus.
GCSE students are required to have lessons on an instrument or voice.
Performing
Pupils perform a solo and ensemble piece which accounts for 40% of the overall GCSE grade.
Composing
Pupils produce two compositions based around the areas of study of The Western Tonal Tradition, Popular Music and World Music.  Composition accounts for 30% of the overall GCSE grade.
Listening and Appraising
Pupils develop their listening skills and learn about different musical styles and features.  The study The Western Tonal Tradition, Popular Music and World Music.  Within these areas of study, pupils focus on the elements of music such as tonality, rhythm, melody, harmony and form.  Skills acquired are then assessed in the form of a listening exam.  This accounts for 30% of the overall GCSE grade.
Level 2 Music Technology (NCFE)
The music technology course is a practically-based, hands-on learning experience in which pupils study five units:
Unit 1 Use MIDI sequencing software
Unit 2 Understand the applications of music technology
Unit 3 Use sound recording techniques
Unit 4 Explore job opportunities in the music technology industry
Unit 5 Use audio sampling and sequencing
Assessment of the course is achieved through the creation of a portfolio of work which evidences required skills. Upon passing the course, pupils gain two GCSE's at grade B.
