Media Key Stage 5

WJEC MEDIA STUDIES AS/A2:

Unit 1: MS1  25 % (50%) is a 21⁄2 hour written exam with one analytical question on unseen audio-visual or printbased material, one about representation and one about audience.

Unit 2: MS2  25%  (50%) is coursework which has three components:  one pre-production – a digital storyboard (20); one production which develops from the  pre-production -  a short film (40); and one report on the production process (40).

Unit 3: MS3  25%  is coursework with three components: a written investigation into media text(s) based on either genre, narrative and/or representation (45); a media  production (45); and an evaluation of how the production was informed by the  investigative research (10).

Unit 4: MS4  25% is a 21⁄2 hour written paper on Text, Industry and Audience which has three questions (30 marks each). The media industries of newspapers, television & film will be studied.

WJEC FILM STUDIES AS/A2:

Unit 1: FM1  20 % (40%)  Coursework:

•  One analysis of how a film produces meanings and responses (1500 words) (30)

•  One creative project based on a film sequence or short film (40) & a reflective analysis (10).

Unit 2: FM2   30% (60%) is a 21⁄2 hours written examination on Producers and Audiences of film (40) Topics in British Film – Ewan McGregor &/ Thatcher’s Britain (40) and US Film – a comparative study of two films from the slasher genre (40).

Unit 3: FM3  25 % Coursework:

•  a small-scale research project (40)

•  a creative project (45) and a reflective analysis(15).

Unit 4: FM4  25 % is a 2 3⁄4 hour Written Paper - Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates:

Section A: World Cinema topics – Power Poverty & Conflict (35)

Section B: Spectatorship topics – Emotional Response to Film (35)

Section C: Single Film - Critical Study –‘Talk to Her’ Almodovar (2002) (30).
