Media Key Stage 4

WJEC MEDIA STUDIES GCSE is available as an option, and is taught in mixed ability grouping. The course is assessed by 60% controlled assessment and 40% examination. The exam focuses on set topics; the areas for examination in Summer 2011 are music video & music fan websites. The controlled assessment tasks are:

One textual investigation onto genre

One textual investigation into narrative or representation

One production piece such as a 3-minute documentary film or a 3-minute genre film sequence. There must be research and planning and an evaluation submitted for the production piece.

WJEC FILM STUDIES GCSE is available as an option, and is taught in mixed ability grouping. The course is assessed by 50% examination and 50% internal assessment. There are 2 examinations:

Paper 1: Exploring Film (1 hr 30 minutes, 30%) will assess the knowledge and understanding of film language and key industry and audience issues relating to the disaster genre.

Paper 2: Exploring Film outside Hollywood (1 hour, 20%) is on the South African film ‘Tsotsi’.

Coursework consists of an analysis of a chosen film sequence, a pitch and associated preproduction for a creative idea, a production – a short film segment or poster campaign and a reflective analysis.

OCR imedia Level 2 is available as an option, and is taught in mixed ability grouping. The course is 100% coursework and students will complete the following units: Digital Graphics, Web Authoring, Interactive Multimedia Concepts, Digital Sound, and Digital Video.
