Year 10 Speaking and Listening Assessment
A courtroom scene based on prior knowledge of “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller
Miss C Redmond, English teacher:
“In Year 10/11 pupils have to do three speaking and listening assessments, one of which is a drama focused activity. In order to achieve a high grade pupils must independently create a complex role, making inventive use of a range of appropriate drama techniques to sustain a character and direct the response of the audience.
When given the prompt to write a courtroom scene based on their prior knowledge of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and using the grade criteria, the five boys, Callum Stevens, Jack Gilbertson, Ryan Hannon, Sam Neil and Andy Messenger, none of whom are drama students this year, produced this outstanding piece. The class was completely silent and captivated by their performance and they finished to rousing applause.”
Mrs H Norman, Head of English said that what made it exceptionally impressive was that the students adapted and delivered the authentic language, which Arthur Miller had written for the play, with great confidence.
