65 theatres, 500 schools, 10,000 young people and 11 of them were ours!
It was indeed a night to remember!
“Today’s groundlings, tomorrow’s success stories.”
Maggie Brown, media writer and historian of Channel 4
Natasha Allen Yr 10, Marcus Blan, Callum Boles, Bliss Geden, James Grant, Edward Hilditch, Becca Price, Kieran Tocher Yr 11 and Tamara Higham, Jessica Mcdonald and Sophie Taylor Yr 12 presented our school’s performance on 15th October at Liverpool’s Contemporary Urban Theatre, to an audience of parents, friends, teachers and other Shakespeare enthusiasts!
“Come and see four local schools performing their own unique half hour interpretations of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. With tragedy, comedy and romance all on the bill, you’re guaranteed a night to remember!” was the compelling invitation.
Following several weeks of intensive rehearsals, led by Miss S Parker and Miss L Wright, (assisted by Mrs M Baxter and Thea Hall, school chaplain), and a workshop at the Contemporary Urban Theatre, the students performed their dress rehearsal in the morning and then closed the wonderful evening with a superb production of “Twelfth Night”. Every single member of the cast raised the standard of their performance and the result was outstanding!
The other schools performing that evening were: Bankfield School, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Christ the King Catholic and Church of England (VA) Centre for Learning, “Romeo and Juliet” and Dorin Park School who performed “Macbeth”.
‘The quality of performance and enthusiasm of all the pupils involved was apparent and they should all be very proud of their achievement,’ Mrs Baxter.
‘This has been the first time we have taken part in the School Shakespeare Festival and I was really nervous about what to expect but I have had a fantastic time, and enjoyed every second of it.
I have worked with an amazing cast, who have always shown their enthusiasm and commitment and worked hard throughout the whole process. They have given up their summer holidays and four evenings a week to create a professional performance of Twelfth Night!
This has most certainly been one of the highlights of my career. Thank you for all your hard work!’ Miss Parker.
'I have absolutely loved working with all of you on 'Twelfth Night'. Since starting at Penketh two years ago I have wanted to get involved with drama - what a fantastic way to make a start! Thank you so much for all your hard work and enthusiasm, it has been a pleasure working with you all and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year. Well done!' Miss Wright.
