Teacher to run to raise money for pupil’s Goa trip

A MEMBER of maths staff is to help a pupil in his form raise funds for a trip to India.

Year seven Rebekkah Quarrie and her mother, Karin, are planning to travel to the Goa region to help children in need of care and have to raise over £3,000 before December to ensure they can go.

To help raise the money, Rebekkah’s form tutor, Mr I Farrar, will compete in a 10km race in Manchester in May.

Rebekkah Quarrie in year 7 (7/5) and her mum, Karin are planning to travel to Goa in December 2011 for three weeks, to work with a group of children who need to be cared for by people other than their parents. Some are orphaned and some from very poor families.

The mission of Love India Charitable Trust is to touch the lives and change the futures of the children in their care. If you would like any more information please look at

http://platinumpartnersfoundation.co.uk/india_orphanage who support the charity.

We will be helping with after school studies in Maths, English and Science 6 days a week. We are also likely to be doing art, craft, sport and improving their spoken English.

Currently there are eight children, but this number will increase when they get their own building, as there are children on the waiting list. Sali and Johnson have fundraised with friends, to buy the land and build a temporary shelter for the children and their family.  They are currently fundraising to build a permanent home for all the children. Four of the children are now sponsored; it’s amazing how far £20 a month goes!

This is a great opportunity for us to see another culture and be immersed in it, rather than glossing over the poverty and seeing only the riches.  This includes catching crowded buses and eating with the children sat on the floor and also eating with our right hand.  Curry every day for lunch and tea!  Also having seconds is considered polite, so even if you don’t like it there is nothing else as there are not takeaways like we have.

Throughout the year, Mr Farrar’s form will be taking part in fundraising activities to help Rebekkah and her Mum to reach their target of over £3000!
